Standard 2: Student Learning

A teacher must understand how students learn and develop and must provide learning opportunities that support a student's intellectual, social, and personal development.

My interpretation: All individuals learn differently and have different intellectual strengths. A teacher must provide different learning strategies in order for students to flourish at their strengths. On the other hand, a teacher should also encourage students to step outside their comfort zones in order for them to challenge themselves and grow intellectually.

As part of a larger inquiry unit design for one of my methods courses (see MSEP 10), a classmate and I located several reading/audio materials for our (fictional) students. The point of this was to provided differentiated materials. In other words, we provided content that varied in difficulty so that the students would be able to select materials that be best suited for their abilities.
