Standard 3: Diverse Learners

A teacher must understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities

My interpretation: Teachers must be prepared to instruct students in a variety of ways since not all students learn the same way. Also, content area teachers should know how their students with special needs could best be served in their classes.

In my Learners with Special Needs course, I analyzed a case study of a student with special needs. In this case, the student's school district had not provided her with an adequate IEP. Reviewing this case reminded me how important the collaborative nature of the IEP process is.
